Chia Breakfast Pudding
(makes 4 bowls)
4 cups brazil nut mylk with a pinch of salt and a drop of vanilla extract, and, depending on how sweet you want it, 1 or 2 tbsp of agave nectar
1 cup chia seeds
1/2 cup raisins
2 bananas, cut into thin slices
1 cup blueberries
Put the mylk, chia seeds and raisins together in a bowl and mix by hand. Add blueberries and bananas, or indeed any seasonal fruit on top.
You know we here at T//F//L are major food geeks, we love the history of all food – especially one as ancient as the chia seed. Here are a couple of chia seed history tidbits: Chia is the Mayan word for strength. Apache warriors would tie a bag of chia seeds to their belt when they went into battle, and Aztec warriors sustained their strength in battle by eating them. They were considered to be so precious and valuable that they were even used as money!
What those ancient cultures knew then is proved in modern labs today: their strength-giving abilities are due to a synergy of minerals, vitamins, easily digestible protein, antioxidants and being the richest plant source of Omega-3 (the vital fats that protect against inflammation—such as arthritis—and heart disease). In fact, they contain more Omega-3 than salmon! Chia seeds are also very helpfull for weight loss, as they displace calories and fat. There are a lot more factoids but we will give you a break (for now) – just try ’em and feel the magic!
Raspberry Chocolate Crunch Smoothie
3 cups of frozen raspberries
1 peeled, chopped, and then frozen banana
1 tb. raw cacao powder
1 cup cold water
1/2 cup candied cacao nibs
Blend frozen fruit, cacao powder and cold water until very smooth, pour into a serving glass and then sprinkle candied cacao nibs on top!
